Teacher Email to me - 2015
Hi everyone,
Thanks for a great meeting this afternoon, I really enjoy talking about my passion and the great things that we can do with Athletic Development/Physical Education/Sports Academy in our district. I really believe that we have a phenomenal opportunity to develop a path for success in our school community that will in turn develop a result seen throughout Grande Prairie and beyond.
Tonight I had the opportunity to meet a young lady who works in our district named Chelsea Stone from St. Mary’s Sexsmith. She took the opportunity to share what she is passionate about and it really reminded me of myself. I think that Chelsea gets it because she is teaching for a purpose beyond the pay cheque/holidays, and all the other extrinsic motivators that we sometimes get caught up in.
Chelsea for some reason chose me to share her vision of a outdoor education program that she believes that she is the right person to develop. She has a great deal of experience by the sounds of it, and has worked extensively as a teacher in the Summers with Paul Kane high school out of St. Albert. She was wondering how she might be able to share her knowledge and vision to get something off the ground. I told her that you folks would be the ones that she would need to sell it to. I think she has a well thought out idea of how to properly deliver an outdoor education program, that includes CTS credits and physical education credits in a two week model for students during the Summer. I gave her advice and mentorship in regards to how I developed the Athletic Development program, the struggles in the first year, pitfalls to watch for and how to develop CTS credits.
Chelsea is currently being offered a Summer teaching position with the St. Albert School Board at Paul Kane again this year. She feels that she is best served to stay here in Grande Prairie and develop her own program with our board. The contacts that she has made I think are valuable through an organization called HeLa Ventures: http://www.helaventures.com and she feels that she can reconnect with them here in our area to help our students out. She even mentioned an opportunity of having students gain certifications through her program.
Further to this conversation, Chelsea shared her passion for coaching and the many athletic successes that she has experienced in the sports of rugby, and ringette; both at the national level. I feel that she is a real asset to our district and could be utilized in other ways such as coaching and mentorship of our young female students. She expressed a real interest in coaching female rugby at St. Joes because she does not have the student body to do so at St. Mary’s.
I would love for you to hear what she has to say, as I think that it holds value. I would also support her in this endeavour and if you think that I could be of some use to helping her get this program off the ground I would be open to it. She gained my attention with what she had to share and I left feeling really motivated with her passion.

Chelsea,
At the end of this year, I want to write to say thank you for being such
a good teacher for Timothy this past year in English.
I am reading a book called "The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller and I
have a quote to share with you:
" Providing students with the opportunity to choose their own books to
read empowers and encourages them. It strengthens their self-confidence,
rewards their interests, and promotes a positive attitude toward reading
by valuing the reader and giving him or her a level of control. Readers
without power to make their own choices are unmotivated." p.23
If you haven't read this book, you should. It's very good. You are
already using many of her ideas. It was a joy to watch Tim start to
enjoy reading more again this year. He found a couple series' that he
will continue to read.
Thank you for your encouragement to him. Thank you for getting excited
about what the kids are reading, which in turn, thrills them and keeps
them reading.
I wish you a wonderful summer with some refreshing moments for your spirit.
Take care,
Maureen Schmidt

Hi ladies,
I just wanted to say that I love that you are at St. Mary's....my young and smart and funny and wild and crazy colleagues. You two were made to be junior high teachers....not everyone can do this you know but you two do it perrrrrrrfectly.
Chelsea - I'm glad that you and i can finally get some time to work together for PD on stuff that we already wanted to get together and work on.
Kate - We didn't plan anything in particular related to PBL but I would like to work with your more (even on an informal basis) in the area of building student skills with source analysis and "position taking" ..... let's talk about this
Have a grrrrrrreat weekend my friends!
